Everyone's Favorite Word "Free"
When travelling through London there are several landmark and historically significant areas that must be visited. Some of those places are extremely worth the price of admission; yet there are other areas within the city of London that are must-sees for the budget-weary traveller that give insight into the everyday life of a Londoner. Here are a few sites that should be visited for free:
If the purpose of your trip is to save money and see the everyday life of a Londoner, then this is the perfect opportunity to explore the city and its inhabitants:
- Hyde Park: considered of the greatest city-parks in the world, it has everything that an explorer could ask for: a huge lake in which you can pose for photographs, four thousand plus trees, plenty of areas to walk, and plenty of benches for people watching. Best of all, it is free to walk into the park and around the park.
- If you happen to be the outdoorsy-type of traveller you should consider Bushy Park in Middlesex, which boast 1,099 acres of land, plenty of free-roaming deer, an assorted variety of fungi and plants, with grasslands, and ancient wooded trees. This is paradise for those seeking to get an off-the-beaten-path experience.
- Are you interested in Biomedical Research? Stem cells? Cancer Cells? If this interests you, even if it does not, go to Centre of the Cell located in an actual biomedical research centre to learn about the life of an actual scientist and how it benefits society. Who knew that you could learn about scientist for free? Make sure to plan in advance otherwise you will be sorely disappointed.
- You have not experienced the history of London yet? Then get a move on it! Head to the Museum of London to learn about the Saxons, the Romans to contemporary London and how it was all built. Who knew that you could actually learn about history for free at a museum? They normally charge money for entrance, but a simple donation will do for this museum which allows you the experience and opportunity to learn about the plague, civil war, and fires in London.
These are a couple of options for being able to visit and learn about London and the everyday experience of life in another country. You have the parks which is an activity many people from London experience everyday; you have science and biomedical research is what many people in contemporary science and media believe to be useful or controversial; and last you learn about the history. Without history we are doomed to suffer the same mistakes.
